What others say

Dr. Andreas Tolk, Senior Principal Chief Scientist and Technology Integrator, MITRE Corporation
This book by Walter Ullrich offers a fresh and unique perspective on the history of flight simulation. It not only covers some advancements that are often overlooked in timelines of progress, but more importantly explores the human and social factors that influenced the acceptance and success of new flight simulation technologies in the form of telling stories and providing anecdotes.
Walter brings an engaging journalistic approach, drawing on his technical literacy to provide a more holistic view of the field, inviting the reader to join him on a journey. Rather than just focusing on the nuts and bolts of the technology, he delves into the additional contexts that are often absent from technical manuals, but can be just as important, if not more so, in shaping the real-world impact of innovations.
The result is an entertaining and insightful look at the evolution of flight simulation, balancing its technical components with a deeper examination of the human elements that enabled and affected its development over time.

Andy Smith, President of Halldale Media, review at Halldale.com
Our colleague Walter Ullrich’s new book, All But Flying Is Simulation - The Illustrated History of Flight Simulation, is a fascinating study of the subject from the earliest designs of possible flying machines, through the days of manned flight in the late 1800s and the wars of the 1900s to today’s digital era. From the Antoinette Training Barrel to VR.
Drawing on Italian, French, British, Russian and US sources, Walter has compiled a unique record of the history of simulation with an unmatched collection of images and technical drawings dating from 1799.
An absorbing read for all interested or involved in flight simulation from a keen observer of the simulation industry and its creations.

Message of the NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO) to the NATO Modelling & Simulation Group:
Walter Ullrich, journalist, former active duty officer and NATO member of staff has recently published an outstanding work on the history of flight simulation: “All But Flying is Simulation”. Walter has been reporting on NMSG activities since the early 2000s and, whenever possible, joined us in our Annual Symposia and Conferences such as ITSECs and ITECs. In 2019, at the NMSG Annual Symposium in Vienna, he was presented with the NMSG Meritorious Service Award" (NSMG).
